![]() Nuclear energy is highly contested by the public for obvious reasons. Geothermal energy impedes onsens, or natural hot springs which are culturally significant and a frequent pastime. Both sources of energy are highly contested by the public like renewable energy is in the US. You can say Japan does not have a lack of investment in geothermal energy but we do have the world’s third largest geothermal reserves in the world and rank fourth in the world by nuclear power capacity. There has since been legislation by the national diet separating these monopolies in a phased, bureaucratic plan. Like how ISP’s in the US own the distribution & transmission of internet being the only provider in a zip code while owning fiber optic lines as well as providing and charging for the service itself Japanese energy companies used to own the distribution & transmission of electricity. The energy monopolies have been phased out since 2015 where distribution & transmission of electricity has to be separated in the ten companies that operate the electricity market.
